About

Upper Sweetwater Creek Reserve provides a 5.3 hectare bushland corridor along the upper section of the creek from the Frankston Reservoir to Overport Road. Access is via Caledonia circuit and two foot bridges from Lawson Avenue and Sycamore Road.

The Reserve contains remnant heathy woodland and riparian vegetation. Along the creek the vegetation is dominated by Swamp Paperbark and Swamp Gum. On the Upper slopes Narrow-leaf Peppermint and Coast Manna Gums provide a canopy sheltering a wide variety of plants. The heathy areas contain Prickly and Heath Tea-tree, Correa, Silver banksias, Wedding Bush and Common Heath, our state emblem. The remnant grassy areas contain a mixture of grasses, lillies, rushes, grass trees and orchids.

There are indigenous wildlife living in the Reserve but many are shy like the Common Blue-tongue lizard or nocturnal, such as the Brushtail and Ringtail Possums and Sugar Gliders. You may however, see the diggings of the Swamp Rat or enjoy the calls of the many variety of birds.

Friends of Upper Sweetwater Creek are a small group of enthusiastic individuals who share a common goal of protecting and restoring the indigenous environment and maintaining the bushland corridor between Frankston Reservoir and Lower Sweetwater Creek. The group works to raise community awareness and to appreciate the benefits of natural bushland in a highly urbanised environment. Friends of Upper Sweetwater Creek work in conjunction with Frankston City Council and Melbourne Water.
